Math
For math, we are using Ray’s New Arithmetic along with Strayer and Upton. The kids have been doing real well with it. We are doing math more informally, so we are working slowly through the book, not by grades like some might suggest.
Later I do want to switch over to Systematic Math, more or less when the kids reach about 4th grade. I was good in math, but I did not learn systematically and therefore, I knew how to do the problems, but did not understand the ‘why’ behind the problem. In the higher math, I would like to learn the ‘why’ and have the kids learn it also. He does have a course for adults, which I think is pretty neat.
I have made a few printables to go along with Ray’s. They are basically to help with the addition facts. I am not too worried if the kids get them before we move on to subtraction, but we use these sheets and flashcards for reviewing. You can grab them on the Ray’s Arithmetic page.
Just recently, I found the Ray’s New Primary Arithmetic book in pdf format, so I think I might print them out and have the kids work out the word problems oral one day an by themselves the next. The reason I was going to type the problems out was because it is a little awkward to hold the book open while writing out the answer. Having it on a flat sheet made it easier for the kids to maneuver. Plus, I only have one book. Here is the link to download the book. This is the same book Mott Media sells as Ray’s New Primary Arithmetic.
